About Exquisite Wool Traders

A Note From the Maker - Polly McGuckin, Exquisite Wool Blankets

"I often get asked about the history of our blankets so here is our story… Our proud Exquisite wool blanket history starts here in New Zealand and extends to a woollen mill in England, that dates back to 1783. In 1893 this mill started buying NZ wool. This is proudly displayed in a logbook at the Yorkshire mill. Our family wool buying business, Yaldhurst Wools, Christchurch, buys wool from the same farm featured in that logbook, along with other wool sourced from South Island farms. Some of this wool is exported to the mill in England. This specialist, English textile mill has supported the NZ wool industry for all those years, making not only woollen blankets but fabrics for furnishings, clothes, royal and military ceremonial dress, woollen caskets, snooker, and pool table cloth, to name a few beautiful woollen items made using NZ wool. A.W. Hainsworth also supports wool scours in NZ by always having the wool scoured prior to shipment. Yaldhurst Wools long association with the mill allows me at Exquisite wool blankets, which I established in 2008, to supply beautiful woollen products, from our NZ wool bedding blankets and throws to the Natural Legacy Wool Caskets, with 3 fleeces of NZ wool in each casket. Together we are proud supporters of NZ wool and it is exciting to see the next generation of our family members share our passion for wool. Over the years members of the Hainsworth family have spent time at Yaldhurst Wools learning about the wool supplied to their family mill and what goes into growing top quality wool fibre. If it were not for mills in the UK and Europe who value traditional qualities of craftmanship and integrate them with the latest innovation, NZ would struggle to sustain a wool industry. We all need to stand by each other in NZ and if a product is made from NZ wool, get behind that business, support them and think great, there is another business using wool. The campaign for wool, a multi-national, cross-industry coalition was formed to raise the profile of wool, let us all work and support each other to ensure a better future for wool." Polly X

Throw FAQs
I'm struggling to choose a throw! Can you help? +

Of course! We're happy to assist with any styling advice. Get in touch with us at the Contact page.

I am sensitive to wool. How soft are your throw blankets? +

Our merino range, by Exquisite Wool Traders, are a fine weave with silky softness. They are best when buying for someone who has sensitive skin or has a tactile sensitivity. Our other wool blankets are soft too, but the merino are softest. The Fischbacher 1819 Alpaca throws are exquisitely soft too if you are after a special, premium product.

Are your colours true to what's shown online? +

We do our best to ensure our product images are as accurate as possible, but colours may vary depending on your screen settings.
If you'd like to see more photos of a product, please get in touch—we're happy to help.

Can I see a sample of the fabric before purchasing? +

Feel free to get in touch with us– we have samples of most of our throws available in our Auckland-based studio. Once we confirm if we have the throw in stock you can book an appointment or if you're out of town, we're happy to send photos or videos so you can get a better idea of what you're looking at.

Which of your throws are made with NZ wool, and why is there a difference between NZ made and NZ wool? +

Some of our throws are made from 100% New Zealand wool, which means the wool itself is sourced from NZ sheep—renowned for producing high-quality, durable, and soft fibres. However, not all of these are made in New Zealand.
The term NZ wool refers to the origin of the wool, while NZ made means the product is actually manufactured in New Zealand. Some of our NZ wool throws are woven offshore (for example, in Europe) by mills that specialise in traditional weaving techniques, using NZ wool as the raw material.
We're proud to offer both NZ wool throws and NZ made throws, and these categories sometimes overlap. If you're looking for either—or both—you're welcome to contact us for guidance, or browse our collection with these filters in mind.
